Transcription: In the Aztec revolt that followed Moctezuma's death, the Indians forced the Spaniards to flee Tenochtitlan, those who were able to escape. But the Spanish had lost only a battle, not the war. Many new adventurers now arrived from Cuba to join Cortés' embattled forces. They brought with them exactly what Cortés needed for victory. Ammunition, fresh supplies, horses, and smallpox. The disease quickly spread through the countryside, reaching Tenochtitlan By October, thousands of Indians died in agony, leaving their lands undefended.
